Day by Day Itinerary
Fly to Lulea in Swedish Lapland where you will be met and transferred to the Arctic Retreat.
The transfer, which takes around an hour, will take you from the open expanse of the Archipelago to the forest lands of the interior. You will head off-the-beaten-track as you wind your way down to the river valley.
Set on a bend in the river among the tall pine trees lies the wonderful Arctic Retreat, the brainchild of Nick and Liza, who searched Swedish Lapland for the perfect place to realise their dream.
This exclusive camp comprises just four log cabins, each with an individual style but all have luxurious details. They comprise a loft room bedroom with downstairs living room. Details not normally associated with wilderness cabins are comfy double beds, ensuite shower and toilet, log burner, Nespresso Machine, and private hot tub looking out towards the northern lights.
The separate restaurant cabin comprises just two tables and overlooks the river bend. Liza is an accomplished cook who prepares wonderful meals from locally sourced produce. Sitting here with a glass of wine in hand, savouring fine food and enjoying the scenery is what we call ‘Arctic Heaven’!
Relax, Enjoy your Luxury Cabin or Choose a Guided Wilderness Experience
Start the day in relaxing fashion with a leisurely breakfast and then you will be heading out for an epic adventure by snowmobile as you get to explore your surroundings with your private guide. You will stop for lunch before heading back to enjoy the luxury of your cabin and its view. Immerse yourself in the hot tub and soak up the atmosphere, or indulge in a Swedish massage.
In the evening, if the northern lights are out, they will be visible above the camp. This might be the moment to jump into your hot tub and toast the aurora gods with a glass of bubbly!
Meals will be served during the day in the log restaurant at the Arctic Retreat.
Today you will experience a day out with the huskies and learn the art of mushing as you are taken out on another memorable and exciting private excursion from your retreat. This is a magical way to explore the landscape that surrounds you and fully immerse yourself in this winter paradise.
Back at the cabins you can have a relaxing afternoon before preparing for some fun in the evening as you head out to try aurora snowshoeing. Every night is an opportunity to see the aurora here and it is always fun to mix it with an activity such as snowshoeing!
Airport Transfer & Flight home or extend your holiday
After breakfast, at leisure prior to your transfer to the airport for your flight home.
Alternatively, you could extend your stay to include the unique Tree Hotel which is located about one hour away from the Arctic Retreat. Or take the opportunity to enjoy a mini break in Stockholm, one of the most picturesque capital cities in Europe.
Where You'll Stay
Arctic Retreat
Arctic Retreat is an intimate, high-quality eco-lodge just 50 kilometers north of Lulea and a short distance south of the Arctic Circle. In the heart of Swedish Lapland, next to a secluded river bend, this hidden gem has just three cabins. Mixing the traditional rustic log cabin look with contemporary Scandi chic, this intimate hideaway seamlessly blends style, comfort, and adventure.
Each cabin boasts a private deck with a fire pit and hot tub for added indulgence. Compact yet well-appointed bathrooms feature locally sourced products like lingonberry shampoo.
At Arctic Retreat, guests dine together in a small dining cabin for shared breakfasts and dinners – although the option to enjoy meals in your cabin is also available. Breakfasts are a delightful mix of simplicity and heartiness, featuring eggs, toast, cereals, local jams, and fruits. Lunch, enjoyed outdoors between activities, showcases the rich variety of local produce, from reindeer stew to campfire-cooked salmon. In the evenings, local husky-sledding expert Richard Karlsson crafts inspired menus influenced by local cultures, creating feasts that can last up to three hours. All meals are included in the room rate, with additional charges for alcoholic drinks.
Whether you seek adventure or relaxation, Arctic Retreat caters to your preferences. Action-packed options include husky sledding, snowmobiling, and Northern Lights tours, while those desiring a more leisurely pace can enjoy culinary experiences, sauna rituals, and in-room massages. Embark on a moose safari to discover local wildlife, and on a clear night, look out for the northern lights.

My daughter and I had an amazing time on our trip, we didn’t want it to end! Everything went according to plan, each excursion was well organized and everyone involved with each activity, as well as everyone at the lodge was kind, friendly, positive and happy, which makes such a difference to your whole experience. The food at The Abisko Mountain Lodge was also incredibly good. Our room was large, comfortable and well-furnished. The bathroom too was also spacious and well-equipped. The outdoor clothing provided was of very good quality which kept us warm, and the staff members are happy to change items if they are not quite the right size for you. This is my second trip with Weekend a la carte and I’m sure there will be more as I have complete trust in them. I highly recommend Aurora Nights, it was fabulous.
Thank you for arranging a fabulous holiday, we had a really enjoyable time and would love to return in the future. Hotel Ranga is a lovely place to stay and the owner greeted guests in the restaurant, which was an unexpected welcoming touch. We didn’t see the Northern Lights due to the weather and the trip to the Eyjafjallajokull glacier and volcano was substituted by an excursion to Thorsmork, also due to the weather, which we thoroughly enjoyed; the brochure description doesn’t do it justice. We found Iceland and the people there really charismatic. Although the wind and snow cut short the amount of travelling we could do, we still covered a reasonable amount of what we wanted to see and our appetites are whetted for a return, perhaps in Spring or Summer. We found a couple of great places to eat near the Hotel in Reykjavik. Messin does tasty fish dishes and the Icelandic Street Food restaurant was excellent, offering simple but hearty soups with refills included in the price – great value.
We had a wonderful time! The food at the lodge was amazing and there were some great vegetarian dishes. I had the best beetroot I’ve ever had (beetroot tartare).
Everyone was really friendly and all the guides were good fun and very knowledgeable.
A special thanks to William and Petri who were really friendly and really added a personal touch to our trip. The activities were really well planned and we especially enjoyed the trip with the huskies. The area we were in is stunning and the lodge was very nice. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.
Overall very good. Staff excellent and helpful. Accomodation basic but was what we expected. Tour guides very good (nature walks, snow mobiles, dog sleighs). Sky station disappointing as we never got to go up due to the weather and this seem to be a recurring feature. The alternative walk at night and meal was a let down as a result.Overall would recommend to others.
This was a bucket list trip. The company are specialists and I’ve valued their advice. Everything from the when to go for the best opportunity to see the lights and equipment needed and provided. Our activities included, the Ice Hotel, night photo shoot, snowmobiling, guided walk and the sky station meal. All excellent and well run by knowledgeable experts and guides. The Abisko Lodge is warm comfortable and relaxing the food is excellent and the staff welcoming, friendly and very helpful. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a different and exciting experience.
We enjoyed both the hotels that were arranged by weekend a la Carte Aurora nights. The Porsmork trip was very enjoyable, both guides were fantastic and informative.
The Northern Light hunt trip out of Reykjavik with Superjeep was an adventure and we got to see the lights, worth braving the cold at -6.
Brilliant short break. Hotel Ranga was lovely, excellent food. Managed to see the Northern Lights as well! Iceland on the whole was quite expensive but a lovely place to visit, the people were very friendly.
Cannot thank this company enough. Our break to Iceland was the second time we’ve let them organise everything for us and once again they didn’t disappoint. Everything ran seamlessly and the organised tours were wonderful. This company knows what they are doing. If you want to experience the geysers, the volcano, the northern lights and all the other exciting things that Iceland has to offer then this is the company to use.
