Day 5
Train trip to Norway or Explore Abisko National Park. Evening Northern Lights Photo Experience

Enjoy the lodge breakfast before taking the train that still runs on the amous iron ore railroad linking the largest underground iron ore mine in the world in Kiruna with the port at Narvik. The journey is filled with beautiful mountain vistas, frozen waterfalls and stunning Arctic valleys.

Once in Narvik you will have around 3 hours to explore town before the return trip. You have the opportunity to ascend to the observation deck of the Scandic Hotel and take coffee or lunch, visit the newly built Peace Museum  (which chronicles life in these parts under Nazi Occupation) or take the cable car to the vantage point with views over the fjords.

This trip is weather dependent as the pass between Norway and Sweden can be haradous in high snow/ wind conditions.

Plan B is the the team at Abisko Mountain Lodge will suggest a couple of walking programmes you can enjoy by yourselves in the National Park. Abisko is sandwiched between mountains and lakes and exploring on foot with a lunch stop at the tourist centre is a good way of discovering these beautiful arctic landscapes. The chairlift to the Sky Station is open from mid February onwards for day visits.

This evening enjoy the fine menu at Abisko Mountain Lodge prior to joining Chad Blakley or one of his team on their exclusive Northern Lights photo tour designed for Weekend a la Carte’s guests staying at Abisko Mountain Lodge. This gives you fantastic opportunities to see and photograph the Aurora Borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park.

Walk right out the Lodge front door and transfer by snowmobile to the exclusive location with commanding views over the mountains and the lake, both of which provide wonderful backdrops for Aurora photos! You will have 2 guides, one to instruct you and the other to look after you and make drinks etc. We have a yurt set up with a fire so you can warm up if necessary.

You will be supplied with cameras preset for Aurora photography and spend the evening in Abisko National Park. You have a base in a Sami Tepee where a fire and hot drinks are provided. Whether you are a Pro or never taken a picture in your life you have a great chance of going home after your Northern Lights holiday with some beautiful Aurora photographs and memories that will last a lifetime!

Máttaráhkká Northern Lights Lodge

We are proud to offer this small intimate lodge for exclusive use by our clients.

This 7 room intimate lodge is situated in a super location on a slight elevation with magnificent views across the arctic tundra to the Abisko alps. The emphasis at the lodge is on two elements, Sami culture and ensuring you have the best chance of seeing the northern lights.

This small intimate lodge used to be a Sami handicraft centre until the owners had the idea to turn it into an exclusive retreat. With only 7 bedrooms and an open plan lounge and dining room, the emphasis is on relaxing in a cosy environment. The rooms have a downstairs en-suite room with a staircase leading to a loft sitting room.

If you are a group of 8 or more friends or family traveling together and wish to have the lodge privately please let us know. This is a great way of celebrating a big birthday or wedding anniversary

The lodge has a fabulous sauna and a very unusual northern lights hot tub on the roof where you can star gaze or hunt for the Aurora. (This carries an extra charge).

Other benefits of a stay here mean that you can snowmobile straight from your doorstep into the Arctic wilderness.

Evenings are focused on good food, relaxation and the Northern Lights so if you are looking for a 'home away from home' experience then look no further.

Abisko Mountain Lodge

Right in the small hamlet of Abisko, world renowned for the Northern Lights, lies a small welcoming Lodge run by our good friends Mina and Dick Johansson. Dick is one of the most qualified mountain guides in Sweden and looks after all the adventure whilst Mina can be described as a Skier, Creative CEO and ray of sunshine who lights up the Lodge.

Abisko Mountain Lodge offers genuine accommodation in an old-fashioned mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and the cuisine is centred on raw ingredients. It is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award which took 4 years to achieve. Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!

The 16 standard rooms in the low red 'Swedish style house' are all en-suite. Although basic they are warm and cosy. There are no televisions in the rooms as time is spent meeting guests around the bar or in the wonderful lounge area.

Additionally there are 4 new superior rooms added in early 2015. These four rooms are in a separate annexe and are used exclusively by Aurora nights.

Order a coffee or a glass of wine at the bar, read a magazine or spin a yarn about your arctic adventures and the magnificent aurora displays you have seen.

For those wanting to soothe the muscles there is a sauna.

Situated in a picturesque valley they are perfectly placed for guests to combine both a northern lights and arctic adventure. For those of you that appreciate good food, meals prepared and served in the smallest restaurant  in Sweden are a delight.

There are two cosy double bedded cabins with large glass windows facing north towards the northern lights horizon. Modern styling includes satellite TV!

There is an adjacent toilet and shower block and an outdoor hot tub which guests are invited to use.

After dinner sit around the outdoor fire, gaze at the stars and hopefully the aurora, enjoy a hot drink or a whisky and appreciate how special it is to own a piece of Lapland for moment in time!

Testimonials

Hi Kevin Just wanted to send you a quick email to say thank you very much for an amazing trip to Sweden. My husband and I had a wonderful time due to all the friendly guides and people who moved us around so efficiently. The icing on the cake was seeing an amazing display of the magical Northern Lights on our last evening. Perfect 50th Birthday treat for my husband which neither of us will forget.

Sandy

I must say that from the first contact of dealing with Kevin to the end yesterday our whole experience was better than we expected and my wife had a truly unforgettable birthday. Thanks for all your service and I will definitely recommend Weekend Alacarte to friends and family. The service was Ten out of Ten and I would even give Twenty out of Ten if I could. Thanks again for giving us a wonderful time.
