DAY 3
Husky Sled Driving & Sami Northern Lights Evening

DAY 3
Husky Sled Driving & Sami Northern Lights Evening

After breakfast enjoy what for many is the favourite day of a trip to Lapland – driving your own sled dog team.

Transfer to the kennel on the road to Nikkaluokta through a river valley where moose congregate in winter.

Ylva Sievertsson is one of a select group of accomplished ‘lady’ husky guides, whose kennel is in a remote valley from where she runs very personal sled dog trips. As you will discover she has a very special relationship with her dogs and it is a thrill to visit her kennel and spend time with her dogs.

Once you arrive at the kennels get acquainted with the dogs and receive detailed instructions about how to drive them. Harness the dogs and feel their excitement as you attach the sled. Head out into the frozen river valley where you will have opportunities to take turns in driving the team whilst making stops to take photos. The location is outside the major tourist areas and we can almost promise that you will enjoy pristine arctic nature alone.

You will be out for around 2 hours before heading back to base for a warming lunch in the traditional ‘Kota’ adjacent to the family home.

This evening spend some time with Ida Maria Svonni who is a descendant from a local Sami family. The Sami people, indigenous to Lapland, are still reliant on their centuries old reindeer herding.

Visit the Sámi Museum for your first step into Sámi culture. See the traditional Sámi clothes and listen to the story of a nomadic people’s lifestyle before moving on to Ida Maria’s Tepee where you will hear the fascinating story of Sami Life and how the annual calendar is geared around the 8 seasons dedicated to managing the Reindeer herd.

Before dinner visit the reindeer Corral and feed them with lichen before having a traditional dinner cooked and served in the Tepee using local ingredients and is served with your own baked traditional Sámi flatbread and coffee.

To end the evening walk down to the Mystical Torne River, the source for the Ice that is used to build the ICEHOTEL and gaze up into the north sky for hopefully a Northern Lights display in the arctic sky before heading back to your lodge.

DAY 4
Day Full of Authentic Seasonal Arctic Experiences

DAY 4
Day Full of Authentic Seasonal Arctic Experiences

Mikko, who runs Mattarahkka Lodge, is no ordinary host and he (and his family who help run the lodge) really put huge emphasis on Authenticity, which is what today is all about!

After breakfast and depending on the season you will do what’s best to do in the area according to the time of year – a spontaneous fun excursion of the day. It could be a moose safari on snowmobiles, a forest husky ride or a visit to the reindeer calves and making bread in a Tepee with the local Sami. Other popular choices are ice fishing, snowshoe walks with wilderness lunches and a visit to the world’s largest underground iron ore mine!

The day will be full of surprise and spontaneity!

This evening enjoy dinner at the lodge. If you have been out ice fishing why not help the chef cook your catch!

The evening is at leisure to soak up the atmosphere at the Lodge or sit and have a glass of wine by the fire, or if you want to end on a real high, why not do the Northern Lights hot tub evening!

This 7 room intimate lodge is situated in a super location on a slight elevation with magnificent views across the arctic tundra to the Abisko alps, widely considered to be the best location on earth for northern lights holidays.

With only 7 bedrooms and an open plan lounge and dining room, the emphasis is on relaxing in a cosy environment. The rooms have a downstairs en-suite room with a staircase leading to a loft sitting room.

The lodge has a fabulous sauna and a very unusual northern lights hot tub on the roof where you can star gaze or hunt for the Aurora. (This carries an extra charge).

Reviews & Feedback

Testimonials

This was one of our most enjoyable and unique trips ever! All transfers were on time, accommodation excellent, and excursions memorable. A night sleigh ride, playing with reindeer, snowmobiling, dog sledding, photographing the Northern Lights are only a few of the amazing things we did. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone.

Bobby

When making initial enquiries about the holiday Mr. Collins was a pleasure to talk with. He gave an honest account (everything turned out to be 'as billed') coupled with a great enthusiasm about the people and place without doing a 'hard sell'. Both him and his colleague were helpful with our questions and additions.
