Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1:
Fly to Reykjavik, Private Transfer to Highland Centre

Fly to Reykjavik. On arrival you will be picked up and transferred to the Highland Centre in the heart of the Highlands in a 4WD.

During the 3 hr transfer a stop will be made for dinner at Restaurant Strond which prides itself on serving fresh homemade food made from local ingredients. (Payable locally).

After dinner it is wise to keep your eyes peeled as you may well see Northern Lights which of course the guide will stop for ! Overnight at the Highland Centre

DAY 2:
Private Highland SuperJeep Adventure & Snowmobile to bbq

Today you have a combined superjeep and snowmobile adventure!

We only work with local guides to this area who have lived all their life in Iceland.

Highly experienced Hilmar or Arni will give you a wonderful action packed day whilst regaling you with their stories. Arni can tell you about evacuating his family farm which is right beneath the volcano which famously erupted in 2010. Hilmar is a young adventurous guide who is an active member of the ICESAR rescue team and has some stories to tell about rescuing over-ambitious tourists! We always have fabulous feedback on this team and how much people enjoy the personalised, relaxed guided day they experience with these enthusiastic and local guides who try so hard to give you that extra special day.

This area is only available to superjeeps in the winter and so you will be really off the beaten track having an adventure!

In the morning you will start the journey at the nearly impassable road to Mount Helka. However as you are in a SuperJeep and with a little bit of luck you should make it through without using the shovel, but don’t worry the guide with you is very experienced and used to these conditions and is well prepared, and it is all part of the adventure!

As Mount Helka gets closer look out for the impressive lava field that has poured out of this volcano throughout the centuries.

We will take you to where the best snow is for the snowmobiling. The snowmobile guide will give you the introduction on how to operate the snowmobiles and then you have a 2 hour snowmobile adventure ontop of the lava fields! You will snowmobile to a spot and stop for a private bbq lunch, after which you can swop drivers for the return loop back to the superjeep where you will continue your superjeep tour visiting Valagja on the way home.

This day is about 6 hours long with 2 hours of snowmobiling. Overnight and dinner (Payable locally) at the Highland Centre .

DAY 3:
Private Þjórsárdalur Valley Exploration; Gjainn Canyon, Haifoss Waterfall, Secret Lagoon, Northern Lights Hunt

Morning at leisure to relax at the hotel. Late morning you will be picked up in a 4WD so you can spend the rest of the day exploring the beautiful valley of Þjórsárdalur, hiding in the shadows of volcano Hekla.

The Þjórsárdalur valley is lush and contains amazing natural and cultural attractions. We will visit Háifoss, the second highest waterfall in Iceland as well as Hjálparfoss waterfall. Gjáinn canyon is a beautiful oasis and the farm of Stöng, which was covered by the ashes from Mt. Hekla’s 1104 eruption and excavated in 1939, is not to be missed. A picnic lunch has been included today with so many options of where to stop to eat it with a view !

From there we will drive to the Secret lagoon, one of Iceland´s oldest swimming pools, full of natural hot spring water where you can soak and relax for a couple of hours.

Afterwards we will take you to Efstidalur farm for dinner. (Payable locally). Returning to the Highland Centre, arriving back at about midnight, we will be hunting for the Northern Lights as we go.

This is a full day lasting 11-12 hours.

DAY 4:
Private Golden Circle 4 WD and onwards to Reykjavik

After breakfast you will be taken in a 4WD to explore the Golden Circle, one of Iceland´s most famous highlights.

You will go for a walk at the beautiful Thingvellir National Park and UNESCO Heritage site. You will get a close look at how the tectonic plates drifted apart and where the first settlers of Iceland founded the world´s oldest parliament Althingi in the year 930.

Next up is the geysers area with the famous Geysir which all other geysers are named after. Here we’ll see the lively geyser Strokkur erupt roughly every 5-10 minutes, which can reach a height up to 25 meters and we’ll also have a look at the other geothermal features around it.

A stop will be made at a tomato farm for lunch for a hearty homegrown tomato soup with fresh bread. (Not included and payable locally). Here the owners will talk you through how tomatoes can be grown all year round in this cold climate with their greenhouses heated to Mediterranean heat level.

To end with you will be taken to see Gullfoss waterfall, which many Icelander´s call the Queen of all Waterfalls here in the land of ice and fire.

After this exploration of the Golden circle you will continue your journey into central Reykjavík where your new accommodation awaits you. Evening at leisure and overnight in Reykjavik.

“The superjeep day of exploring, with our awesome guide Gustie, was definitely a highlight (along with the lights showing up for us on Saturday night!). The weekend lived up to all our expectations and we really appreciated how smooth everything went. Thank you for organising such a great trip.”

“Trips were superb. Magnus and Smoulder took us everywhere the weather allowed us go. Nothing was any trouble to them. They really could not have done any more for us. Every single minute was awe inspiring. And we DID see the Northern Lights!! ”
