DAY 3:
Wilderness Drive your own Husky Adventure. Evening at World Famous Aurora Sky Station in Abisko

DAY 3:
Wilderness Drive your own Husky Adventure. Evening at World Famous Aurora Sky Station in Abisko

After breakfast enjoy what for many is the favourite day of a trip to Lapland – driving your own sled dog team.

Transfer to the kennel on the road to Nikkaluokta through a river valley where moose congregate in winter.

Ylva Sievertsson is one of a select group of accomplished ‘lady’ husky guides, whose kennel is in a remote valley from where she runs very personal sled dog trips. As you will discover she has a very special relationship with her dogs and it is a thrill to visit her kennel and spend time with her dogs.

Once you arrive at the kennels get acquainted with the dogs and receive detailed instructions about how to drive them. Harness the dogs and feel their excitement as you attach the sled. Head out into the frozen river valley where you will have opportunities to take turns in driving the team whilst making stops to take photos. The location is outside the major tourist areas and we can almost promise that you will enjoy pristine arctic nature alone.

You will be out for around 2 hours before heading back to base for a warming lunch in the traditional ‘Kota’ adjacent to the family home.

To make it more exclusive we only take a maximum of 8 guests (4 sled dog teams) at the time.

After the tour you will be dropped at Máttaráhkká Northern Lights Lodge, where you will be picked up from for the 1 hour transfer to Abisko.

Check into Abisko Mountain Lodge run by our long standing partners Dick and Mina Johansson. The Lodge offers genuine accommodation in a traditional mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and the cuisine is centred on raw ingredients and is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award that took 4 years to achieve. Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!

This evening  after diner at the lodge  visit the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko, widely regarded as the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights which is located approx. 100km north of Kiruna. Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the Observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask.

During the winter nights when it is dark, depending on the correct weather conditions, it is possible to see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky around you from this fantastic vantage point. The Aurora Sky Station has an exhibition about the Aurora Borealis, created by IRF, the Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna. Here you will learn more about the phenomenon before going out on the viewing deck to begin your night sky gazing.

DAY 4:
Explore Stunning Abisko National Park. Northern Lights wilderness Photo workshop

Abisko National Park is sandwiched between picturesque mountains and Lake Tornetrask one of Sweden’s largest and which freezes during winter. The team at Abisko Mountain Lodge will provide information on trails you can explore and provide a transfer. Visit Abisko canyon with its frozen waterfall and possibly watch  ice climbers ascending the crevices!

This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer, Arctic Char and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area. The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora Call. Abisko Mountain Lodge is in a fantastic location for Northern Lights viewing so if they are out you may be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards!

After dinner join the “Lights Over Lapland” team for their exclusive Northern Lights Photo Tour designed for Weekend a la Carte. This evening provides a great opportunity to see and photograph the Aurora Borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park.

Abisko is situated in a low precipitation zone and has the lowest levels of rain and snow in Lapland. What this means is lots of perfect nights for Aurora watching.

Walk right out the Lodge front door and a snowmobile transfer will take you to our exclusive location with commanding views over the mountains and the lake, both of which provide wonderful backdrops for Aurora photos! You will have 2 guides, one to instruct you and the other to look after you and make drinks etc. We have a yurt set up with a fire so you can warm up if necessary.

You will be supplied with cameras preset for Aurora photography and spend the evening in Abisko National Park. Whether you are a Pro, or never taken a picture in your life, you have a great chance of going home after your Northern Lights holiday with some beautiful aurora photographs and memories that will last a lifetime!

The Original ICEHOTEL - Swedish Lapland

The Original ICEHOTEL is situated in Jukassjarvi Swedish Lapland. It is a feat of engineering and artistic creation and still one of the most impressive and unusual places to stay.

The hotel has 2 restaurants, one serving gourmet food, whilst its more informal Homestead restaurant serves hearty traditional food.

From 2015 The ICEHOTEL consists of 2 structures - the temporary hotel is rebuilt each year from blocks of ice harvested from the Torne river which runs adjacent to the IceHotel. These are stored for the summer in a huge warehouse and as the late Autumn temperature in Jukkasjärvi drops below zero ice artists arrive from the world over to build this magnificent creation. They build the 4 levels of rooms, the ice chapel and the ice bar. Their art is created with imagination and hard work, only to melt away under the unforgiving rays of the spring sun.

The new ICEHOTEL 365 is a permanent ICEHOTEL and a feat of engineering which offers visitors the chance of staying the whole year round. It is an all suite hotel and also house the celebrated ICEBAR. On request we can ask for the luxury suites which have adjacent bathrooms. These carry a supplement.

You will leave your luggage in an adjacent service block where there are saunas and showers, whilst all you will take into the hotel is you and your thermal arctic sleeping bag!

Wake up to a hot Lingonberry juice served in your room prior to the very substantial ICEHOTEL breakfast served in the main restaurant.

Abisko Mountain Lodge

Right in the small hamlet of Abisko, world renowned for the Northern Lights, lies a small welcoming Lodge run by our good friends Mina and Dick Johansson. Dick is one of the most qualified mountain guides in Sweden and looks after all the adventure whilst Mina can be described as a Skier, Creative CEO and ray of sunshine who lights up the Lodge.

Abisko Mountain Lodge offers genuine accommodation in an old-fashioned mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and the cuisine is centred on raw ingredients. It is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award which took 4 years to achieve. Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!

Additionally there are 4 new superior rooms added in early 2015. These four rooms are in a separate annexe and are used exclusively by Aurora nights.

Hotel Rival Stockholm

For those clients wishing to stay in Stockholm overnight we recommend the Rival Hotel. The Rival has its own cinema built 1937 where film previews, concerts and other events are held.

Located at the Mariatorget park on the South Island within short walking distance from the Old Town and 3 stops on the subway from the Central Railway Station.

When opening a decade ago the Rival was widely hailed as Stockholm’s first boutique hotel. Some things have changed since but Rival continues to exude charm and often takes the top spot on Tripadvisor.

The hotel has 7 floors of comfortable rooms. Birch panelling keeps decoration light although in contrast to many other Scandinavian boutique hotels the Rival uses colours and heavy fabrics in a stylish Art Deco-way. The furniture consists mostly of design classics from well-known names such as Claesson and Erik Gunnar Asplund. Portraits of movie stars adorn the comfortable guestrooms. All rooms have 32-inch plasma TV, DVD, iPod dock and Wi-Fi. The front desk has a large collection of DVDs available free to guests.

Little touches are evident throughout the decor and with its cafe and restaurant we think its the best hotel to offer our guests!
