Keep a look out tonight for the Aurora

The sun has launched a massive solar flare towards earth which will hit us around lunchtime on Friday and continue over the weekend. The intensity of this flare is seldom seen and will result in sightings of the northern lights as far south as London and the Southern States in the US.

This Solar Storm originates from a group of sunspots right in the centre of the sun and it does pose some threat to communications one earth as it is pointed right at us! according to experts at the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

The picture below was taken a couple of years ago in Abisko, one of the best places on earth for northern lights viewing when a similar intensity of energy from the Sun was released.

We are liaising with Chad Blakeley at Lights over Lapland in Abisko and will bring you fresh images of how this storm plays out over the next few days.

Meanwhile don’t forget that you can book now to visit Abisko this winter and see aurora displays in this unique location. Take a look at our NORTHERN LIGHTS TRIPS.

About Kevin Collins

Kevin grew up in the wilds of Africa and with family scattered all over the world was introduced to long haul travel from an early age. This turned into a lifelong passion which he has been fortunate to turn into a successful career.

Having spent 20 years in marketing roles in a variety of business environments Kevin set up Weekend a la Carte to provide the kind of experiential breaks that are increasingly being sought after by clients eager to find enriching ways of spending valuable leisure time.

Kevin has increasingly become fascinated with the Northern Lights, and has built up a wealth of knowledge over the years as to how to increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights taking into account weather patterns, moon cycles , solar pulses and daylight hours. Kevin is also a fervent believer in making sure that the break is action packed so you have a fantastic time , even if the Aurora Borealis does not show.
